Meet our Pastor
Pastor Brian K. Smith
Pastor Brian and his wife, Christine Avila-Smith, came to us from Rochester, New York.
Pastor Brian grew up in Baltimore. After graduating from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis in 1995, he was ordained into the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. Pastor Brian's initial call was to one of the Synod's deaf congregations, located in Los Angeles, California. He later served two congregations in New York, one as an associate pastor and the other as sole pastor.
Pastor Brian has been our pastor at Good Shepherd since November of 2023. His heart for ministry is preaching and applying the Word of God to life. He feels blessed to serve alongside his brothers and sister in Christ Jesus - Who is our Good Shepherd.
Pastor Brian enjoys thrill rides with Christine at Hersheypark, and riding his motorcycle...but not so much on Route 30!
Good Shepherd Church has been faithfully worshiping in York, PA, since 1922. The original building was on the corner of South Hartley Street and Salem Avenue. We've been at our current location on Roosevelt Avenue since 2002.
Good Shepherd is a member church of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod and believes the Bible is The Word of God.
Good Shepherd has an active congregation comprised of people of all backgrounds and ages. We come together as a family of Christians for weekly worship, to hear God's Word, to pray, to confess our faith and know forgiveness of sins, and to love one another.
Good Shepherd also partners with Christian Counseling Associates, who operate counseling services out of two of our classrooms. They provide individual, marriage, and family counseling. More information can be found at their website: Christian Counseling Associates.
As a church family, we have many Events, Service Activities, and get-togethers, most include food!
Our History
Being Lutheran - A Short History
In 1517, Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses to the door of the Wittenberg Church. This act started much discussion and led to the Protestant Reformation.
Various documents were later written that further explained the German reformers' positions and their disagreements with the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church.
The first of these documents, The Augsburg Confession, was presented to the Holy Roman Emperor in 1530. This Confession presents the reformers' main articles of faith, and defends them against the views of the Roman Catholic Church.
Other documents that followed the Augsburg Confession include: The Apology of Augsburg and The Formula of Concord, both Epitome and Solid Declaration. Modern readers of these writings will be surprised to find how Biblical they are and how they handle issues still debated today. There's nothing new under the sun!
These Lutheran writings are complied in a volume called The Book of Concord.
